Technology Overview

Below is an overview of the proprietary technologies incorporated into our energy-saving Lumen IQ™ products and systems:

On-Board Intelligence

Lumen IQ™ lamp controllers (C100 and C200) include an on-board microprocessor. The microprocessor enables the lamp fixture to:

  • Intelligently monitor and adjust its light output on-the-fly to ensure the lamp always meets targeted performance levels. It is important to note that this function is compatible with all common ballasts (an electronic ballast is not required).

    Chart: Lumen Depreciation

The chart above shows the blue "mortality" curve, which represents the typical depreciation of lumen output for a high pressure sodium lamp over its lifetime. Note that because of the way in which the lamp depreciates over time, the lumen output at beginning of life is 50,000 lumens. This 'over lighting' ensures that at the 5 year end of life for the lamp, that the lamp still provides enough lumen output (40,000) to meet the lamp manufacturers' and lighting designers' specifications.

As the lamp depreciates over its lifetime, the intelligent lamp controller increases the lumen output in real time to ensure specifications are always maintained. The inefficiency that is eliminated by the lamp controller is represented by the green triangle in the chart. The net result is energy savings of up to 17% on a 150W HPS lamp, and up to 22% on a 400W HPS lamp.

  • Recognize when continuous lamp cycling or continuous non-starts are occurring. The smart microprocessor will then cut the power to the bulb to improve the life of the ballast as well as protect lamp fixture electronics.
  • Communicate with Lumen IQ™ Central (C200 only):
    • Providing data for predictive maintenance reports. By monitoring the bulb's mortality curve, the Lumen IQ™ Street Light Management System can make an "educated guess" as to the timing of the bulb's failure. This will enable you to plan efficient, cost-effective maintenance routes to replace failing bulbs BEFORE they burn out.
    • Providing failure notifications so that you know immediately when lamps have failed for any other reason (eliminating the need for visual checking).
    • Providing data for comprehensive logs and reports. Information can include an accurate profile of the overall energy consumed, accounting for burn-in hours, warm-up time, every lamp light level transition, cycling, non starts, power outages, etc.

Adaptive Lighting

Using our environmentally-friendly Lumen IQ™ Street Light Management System, street light operators can develop, implement and monitor the performance of adaptive lighting protocols from a centralized location. These adaptive lighting capabilities include:

  • Control the performance of individual light fixtures, groups of street lights, an entire network, or any combination thereof.
  • Set light level transition times for the lamps on a periodic (daily, weekly, monthly, user configurable) basis.
  • Adjust light output levels to reduce energy consumption during off-peak hours or for regional events.
  • Set dawn / dusk triggers (based on a photocell or astronomical calculation) to take accommodate for localized ambient lighting.
